An Alternative Theory on Purportedly Weak iPhone XR Demand

Demand for iPhone XR may well be weaker than Apple and analysts expected. I don’t know. But I will say this: you can’t judge this from poor-mouthing from Apple’s Asian suppliers. Every year, right around now, reports appear that Apple suppliers are claiming Apple has cut orders because demand for the latest iPhones is weaker than Apple projected. Every year. Some years, like with the iPhone 6S models, that probably was true. Most years, it’s nonsense — like last year, with the iPhone X. Apple cuts orders from suppliers for all sorts of reasons, and they don’t explain the reasons to the suppliers. Note that I’m not saying Goldman based this note on supplier reports. I just wanted to get the above off my chest. But it is the case that the WSJ story that prompted the Goldman note was based on bad forecasts from Apple suppliers.

Opinion: 5 reasons why the iPad Pro shouldn’t be your next computer

A few days ago, Apple released a new ad for the iPad Pro that gives five reasons it can be ‘your next computer.’ While I thought the ad was well done, I did come away from it frustrated. While I’ve been a big proponent of the iPad for a long time (I’ve bought 500+ iPads over the past eight years), I think the video shows serious flaws with Apple’s mindset at the moment. And I’ve been thinking, is the iPad Pro worth the money?

Logitech to reportedly acquire headphone maker Plantronics for $2.2B

blankPopular computer accessories maker Logitech may be looking to purchase Plantronics, a company that specializes in Bluetooth earpieces and headsets.

According to a report from Reuters, this would be Logitech’s largest acquisition by far to date. This would also help diversify its business and move into new markets.

Apparently, the biggest motivator is to cut down manufacturing costs due to tariffs on imports between China and the United States.

It would come as Logitech and Plantronics seek to keep down manufacturing costs following the introduction of tariffs on imports from China into the United States.

Scientists uncover the secrets behind wombats’ unique cube poo

blank

Wombats are curious creatures. Chubby and short-legged, the marsupials are unusual even before you consider their unique ability to produce cube-shaped poo.

Now, scientists in the US may have discovered how and why the phenomenon occurs.

Dr Patricia Yang, a fluid hydrodynamics specialist from Georgia Institute of Technology, has a particular interest in studying how blood, food and urine move within animals’ bodies.

She and her colleagues found that wombats’ digestive processes and soft tissue structures produce the unusual shape.

”The first thing that drove me to this is that I have never seen anything this weird in biology. That was a mystery,” said Dr Yang.

Sorry Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook isn’t a “positive force”

blank

In a Tuesday interview with CNN, Mark Zuckerberg defended Facebook’s handling of recent scandals and his own leadership of the company. He flatly rejected calls to give up his position as the chairman of Facebook’s board and said he had no plans to fire his top deputy, Sheryl Sandberg.

He argued that despite Facebook’s recent problems, the site ”is a positive force because it gives more people a voice.”

It’s not surprising that Zuckerberg would defend his own company. But Zuckerberg is wrong: there’s no reason to think Facebook is a ”positive force” and a lot of reasons to think the opposite.

Video games are now so beautiful players are spending hours framing stunning works of Internet art

To capture the perfect lighting, Rasmus Furbo directed Spider-Man to crouch on top of a queen-size bed.

The web-slinger sat there, facing the end of the bed, against a black studio-like backdrop for the hero’s classic red and blue suit. The photo shoot was not for some kind of magazine promo for the next Marvel Cinematic offering. Rather the scene unfolded all within a video game.

Furbo, 33, has played video games practically his entire life, but over the summer he found what he calls “a hobby within a hobby” — what’s known by some as in-game photography.

“For me … it’s the same as taking photos out in the real world,” Furbo said. “You just have this ability to go places that you couldn’t do normally.”

As developers stretch the limits of gaming consoles to allow three-dimensional exploration of hyper-realistic worlds, a community of fans uses photos — or rather screenshots — to capture the beauty.
