Pokémon Sword and Shield review-in-progress — A warm and comfy, but mild, curry

Releasing November 15 in stores, online retailers, and the Nintendo eShop, Pokémon Sword and Shield show that the Game Freak studio and Nintendo have made the right call in finally bringing one of the main games in this long-lived, beloved series to its main console. It’s great on the TV, and it’s fun in the Switch’s handheld mode as well. It makes clever use of the Switch’s motion controls and detachable controller, doesn’t forget the PokéBall still exists, and is bright and colorful, whether on your TV or as in portable mode. It’s fantastic to play with kids, either sharing the controller or having them help you (or you help them) with strategies and the strengths and weaknesses of each critter you encounter.

Pokémon Sword and Shield are like a mild curry — comfortable and satisfying, but missing that spice that shows it’s something different.

Pokémon Sword and Shield are showing that a good game can overcome one’s up-and-down (mostly down) history with a franchise, and that you’re never too old to embrace something your children enjoy.

And embrace Pokémon Shield, I have.

The woman who tracks ’dark’ Instagram accounts

Scrolling through the Instagram feed on her phone, 22-year-old Ingebjørg Blindheim explains why she has been given the nickname ”the lifeguard”.

”I see a lot of people who want to die,” explains the young Norwegian.

”I’m not just going to watch someone saying they’re going to kill themselves and ignore it and hope for the best.”

Intervening to help suicidal Instagram users is not a role Ingebjørg would have chosen for herself. She doesn’t work for the social media site, and she isn’t paid for what she does. Nor is she formally qualified to offer help, having received no training in mental healthcare. Instead she feels compelled to act, realising she’s often the last chance of help for those posting their despair online.

”I feel like when I’m not on the phone watching, people might do something to themselves and no-one will see,” she says.

WhatsApp hacked to spy on top government officials at U.S. allies, sources say

blank

Senior government officials in multiple U.S.-allied countries were targeted earlier this year with hacking software that used Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp to take over users’ phones, according to people familiar with the messaging company’s investigation.

Sources familiar with WhatsApp’s internal investigation into the breach said a ”significant” portion of the known victims are high-profile government and military officials spread across at least 20 countries on five continents.

The hacking of a wider group of top government officials’ smartphones than previously reported suggests the WhatsApp cyber intrusion could have broad political and diplomatic consequences.

Just before 8 pm on February 9, 2018, high in the northeastern mountains of South Korea, Sang-jin Oh was sitting on a plastic chair a few dozen rows up from the floor of Pyeongchang’s vast, pentagonal Olympic Stadium. He wore a gray and red official Olympicsjacket that kept him warm despite the near-freezing weather, and his seat, behind the press section, had a clear view of the raised, circular stage a few hundred feet in front of him. The 2018 Winter Olympics opening ceremony was about to start.

As the lights darkened around the roofless structure, anticipation buzzed through the 35,000-person crowd, the glow of their phone screens floating like fireflies around the stadium. Few felt that anticipation more intensely than Oh. For more than three years, the 47-year-old civil servant had been director of technology for the Pyeongchang Olympics organizing committee. He’d overseen the setup of an IT infrastructure for the games comprising more than 10,000 PCs, more than 20,000 mobile devices, 6,300 Wi-Fi routers, and 300 servers in two Seoul data centers.
