Three months before he died, I began to steal things from my father’s house. I wandered around barefoot and slipped objects into my pockets. I took blush, toothpaste, two chipped finger bowls in celadon blue, a bottle of nail polish, a pair of worn patent-leather ballet slippers, and four faded white pillowcases the color of old teeth.
After stealing each item, I felt sated. I promised myself that this would be the last time. But soon the urge to take something else would arrive again like thirst.

When news broke Friday morning, via a local television reporter on Twitter, that about 100 goats were roaming around a residential neighborhood outside of Boise, Idaho, suffice it to say we had questions. Then the Washington Post reported that these were professionalgoats, owned by a company called We Rent Goats, and we had even more questions. Are there such a thing as amateur goats? So Slate called up Mike Canaday, the director of operations at a company called Rent a Goat (whoch once appeared on TV’s Shark Tank), to talk about the funny, but also lucrative and environmentally friendly, business of goat rental.

My home computer in 1998 had a 56K modem connected to our telephone line; we were allowed a maximum of thirty minutes of computer usage a day, because my parents — quite reasonably — did not want to have their telephone shut off for an evening at a time. I remember webpages loading slowly: ten to twenty seconds for a basic news article.
At the time, a few of my friends were getting cable internet. It was remarkable seeing the same pages load in just a few seconds, and I remember thinking about the kinds of the possibilities that would open up as the web kept getting faster.

In June 2016, Antonio Perkins unintentionally broadcast his own death to the world. It was a sunny day in Chicago, and he was sharing it on Facebook Live, a platform for distributing video in real-time, released just a few months earlier.
The video is long. It features Perkins doing mundane summer things. Standing around on the sidewalk. Complaining about the heat. About six minutes in, suddenly, gun shots ring out. The camera moves frantically, then falls to the ground. Later that day, Perkins was pronounced dead.
The video has close to a million views.

GOOGLE IS PLANNING to launch a censored version of its search engine in China that will blacklist websites and search terms about human rights, democracy, religion, and peaceful protest, The Intercept can reveal.
The project – code-named Dragonfly – has been underway since spring of last year, and accelerated following a December 2017 meeting between Google’s CEO Sundar Pochai and a top Chinese government official, according to internal Google documents and people familiar with the plans.
