Scrap dealer finds Apollo-era NASA computers in dead engineers basement | Ars Technica
A pair of Apollo-era NASA computers and hundreds of mysterious tape reels have been discovered in a deceased engineers basement in Pittsburgh, according to a NASA Office of the Inspector General (OIG) report released in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. Most of the tapes are unmarked, but the majority of the rest appear to be instrumentation reels for Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11, NASAs fly-by missions to Jupiter and Saturn. The two computers are so heavy that a crane was likely used to move the machines, the report concluded.Enlarge / Lots of blinky red lights. Does it go bing! too?NASAAt some point in the early 1970s, an IBM engineer working for NASA at the height of the Space Race took home the computersand the mysterious tape reels. A scrap dealer, invited to clean out the deceaseds electronics-filled basement, discovered the computers. The devices were clearly labelled NASA PROPERTY, so the dealer called NASA to report the find.

Border Patrol Says It’s Barred From Searching Cloud Data on Phones – NBC News
U.S. border officers aren’t allowed to look at any data stored only in the ”cloud” including social media data when they search U.S. travelers’ phones, Customs and Border Protection acknowledged in a letter obtained Wednesday by NBC News. The letter (PDF), sent in response to inquiries by Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and verified by Wyden’s office, not only states that CBP doesn’t search data stored only with remote cloud services, but also apparently for the first time declares that it doesn’t have that authority in the first place. In April, Wyden and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., introduced legislation to make it illegal for border officers to search or seize cellphones without probable cause. Privacy advocates and former Homeland Security lawyers have said they are alarmed by how many phones are being searched.

Apple buying, leasing equipment for suppliers to ensure parts for ’iPhone 8’
The equipment is worth ”tens of millions of dollars,” The Korea Heraldsaid on Friday. It quoted an ET Newssource as saying one of three RFPCB suppliers a Taiwanese company decided to back out of the chain, forcing Apple to assist the two South Korean firms still onboard. Herald sources suggested that the Taiwanese company may have been upset by complicated production, tough quality requirements, and low profits.
Apple is said to be using RFPCBs for the new iPhone’s touchscreen panel, but the technology is also reportedly harder to manufacture than regular flexible or rigid circuit boards.
Indeed Apple is allegedly searching for a replacement supplier in Korea. In the meantime the remaining partners, Interflex and Youngpoong Electronics, could split a large chunk of the 100 million RFPCB units Apple is expected to order this year.

Grandparents and other relatives of people living in the US cannot be barred from entering under President Trump’s travel ban, a judge has ruled. The order, by District Judge Derrick Watson in Hawaii, is a fresh legal blow to Mr Trump’s immigration crackdown. The judge said the ban had interpreted a Supreme Court ruling too narrowly. That decision, made last month, partly reinstated the ban on refugees and travellers from six Muslim-majority countries. It said only those with ”bona fide” family ties would be let into the US.But the Trump administration decided that did not include grandparents, grandchildren, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins.Judge Watson, however, disagreed – and ordered that those restrictions should not be enforced.

Apple has been working on rumored ’iPhone 8’ facial recognition solution for at least 3 years
An Apple patent application published Thursday details a method of unlocking a mobile device using facial image and depth data gleaned from specialized sensors and cameras, lending credence to rumors that the company is developing facial recognition systems to augment, or replace, Touch ID fingerprint scanning.
In practice, authentication software contains instructions for detecting a user’s face opposite one or more of the included imaging sensors. In response to detecting a face, the visible light, infrared and 3D capture devices gather image data for local processing.
