The danger of the white American liberal | Racism | Al Jazeera
The boys’ voices were getting louder. The argument over who had the best design for a sampling probe had devolved into an argument about who’s idea was ”just really stupid”.I sat in the science class, surrounded by Lego at a table designed for eighth graders, listening preoccupied to their argument. My mind was elsewhere, fascinated by the only girl on their team, who was doing something remarkable. My presence in that classroom two decades ago was the result of a nearly two-year journey. As an anthropology student at The College of Charleston, I had designed a project to try to understand the high attrition rate of underrepresented students in mathematics and science. My idea: problem-based learning on cooperative teams, rather than the lecture-based and competitive approaches common in schools.

Apple’s ’iPhone 8’ may allow triggering Siri by holding sleep/wake button
To get around the absence of a physical home button, the ”iPhone 8” may let people trigger Siri by holding down the sleep/wake button when they’re not using ”Hey Siri.”The option was allegedly uncovered in source code by Brazilian iOS developer Guilherme Rambo. He didn’t say immediately identify whoch code, but Rambo was previously responsible for uncovering secrets from leaked Apple HomePod firmware, including the ”iPhone 8’s” apparent ”SmartCam” feature.Without a home button, Apple is reportedly having to make major interface adjustments for the ”iPhone 8,” implementing new gestures and a ”software bar,” as well as replacing Touch ID with 3D facial recognition. The company could conceivably put Siri in the software bar, but there have been no rumors to that effect yet.Apple will finally reveal the phone at a Sept. 12 press event. The company is also expected to show off the ”iPhone 7s” and ”7s Plus,”, an LTE-equipped Apple Watch, and a new Apple TV with 4K and HDR support.

Apple’s fitness lab has collected 66,000 hours of exercise data
Men’s Health writer Ben Court got to take a look around Apple’s not-so-secret-anymore exercise lab and the company’s director of fitness for health technologies had some bold claims about the work the lab has done. Apple’s Jay Blahnik told Court, ”Our lab has collected more data on activity and exercise than any other human performance study in history. Over the past five years, we’ve logged 33,000 sessions with over 66,000 hours of data, involving more than 10,000 unique participants.”We’ll just have to take his word on those stats, but with dozens of researchers and medical professionals studying even larger numbers of exercising employees every day for years, it becomes easy to see how Apple can log those sorts of numbers. And those efforts should be visible in the upcoming WatchOS 4, whoch will reportedly include high-intensity interval training and the ability to pair with cardio machines.
