Big companies like to bury unpleasant news on Fridays: A few weeks ago, Facebook announced they have decided to dig in on their patent clause addition to the React license, even after Apache had said it’s no longer allowed for Apache.org projects. In their words, removing the patent clause would ”increase the amount of time and money we have to spend fighting meritless lawsuits.”I’m not judging Facebook or saying they’re wrong, it’s not my place. They have decided it’s right for them — it’s their work and they can decide to license it however they wish. I appreciate that they’ve made their intentions going forward clear.A few years ago, Automattic used React as the basis for the ground-up rewrite of WordPress.com we called Calypso, I believe it’s one of the larger React-based open source projects. As our general counsel wrote, we made the decision that we’d never run into the patent issue. That is still true today as it was then, and overall, we’ve been really happy with React. More recently, the WordPress community started to use React for Gutenberg, the largest core project we’ve taken on in many years. People’s experience with React and the size of the React community —  including Calypso — was a factor in trying out React for Gutenberg, and that made React the new de facto standard for WordPress and the tens of thousands of plugins written for WordPress.

Den 38-årige huvudmannen i den så kallade hackerligan ska bland annat genom att ha använt en landstingsanställds e-postadress försökt beställa surfplattor till ett värde av en halv miljon kronor.Det var i juni som den 38-årige huvudmisstänkte ska ha gjort en beställning på 51 surfplattor i en webbshop, med leveransadress till en adress i Stockholmstrakten. Beställningen gjordes i Landstinget Blekinges namn, genom att en falsk e-postadress som sett ut att tillhöra en anställd har använts.Bedrägeriet lyckades dock aldrig då personal på webbshopen tyckte beställningen var avvikande och kontrollerade den.Nu åtalas 38-åringen, tillsammans med en 42-årig medhjälpare, för försök till grovt bedrägeri.

I dag åtalas åtta personer i en av de största dataintrångshärvorna i svensk rättshistoria. Nu bekräftar Sverigedemokraterna för SVT Nyheter att partiet finns bland de tusentals drabbade – tillsammans med hundratals företag, fler än tio banker samt ett flertal myndigeter.– Jag har drabbats i den bemärkelsen att jag har fått ett sådant mejl, där avsändaren velat få mig att öppna en fil, men jag har inte öppnat den, säger Henrik Vinge, presschef hos Sverigedemokraterna till SVT.Han säger att partiet blev informerad om dataintrånget i våras.– Då fick vi veta att man har försökt infektera tre eller fyra datorer hos oss genom att skicka ett mejl till de datorerna med en bifogad fil. Om man klickar på den filen så installerar den någon typ av virus som skulle kunna skada eller ge de här människorna tillgång till våra datorer, säger Henrik Vinge.

En hackerliga på åtta personer har i dag åtalats i en av de största dataintrångshärvor i svensk historia. SVT Nyheter erfar att hundratals miljoner har stulits från hundratals företag, myndigheter och kommuner.SVT Nyheter kunde i förra veckan avslöja hur mellan 600-700 företag, myndigheter och kommuner har hackats av en liga i något som är en Sveriges största dataintrångshärvor någonsin. Nu har åtalet lämnats in till Malmö tingsrätt.Bland de drabbade finns Sverigedemokraterna, Malmö Stad, ABB, Kriminalvården, Swedbank, NCC, Ikano bank, Resurs bank och varuhuset Gekås i Ullared. Flera av de drabbade innehar så kallad skyddsvärd information.Många flera företag och myndigheter såsom Lunds universitet, SJ och Lantmännen ska ha drabbats, enligt SVT Nyheters källor, men inte vara målsägande i åtalet. Åtalet är begränsat till ett 60-tal målsägande – men ytterligare flera hundra är drabbade.

A viewer instinctively knows the difference between a real smile and a fake one. In July, a Canadian study reported that college students can reliably tell if people are rocher or poorer than average simply by looking at their expressionless faces. Scotland Yard employs a team of “super-recognizers” who can, from a pixelated photo, identify a suspect they may have seen briefly years earlier or come across in a mug shot. But, being human, we are also inventing machines that read faces as well as or better than we can. In the twenty-first century, the face is a database, a dynamic bank of information points—muscle configurations, childhood scars, barely perceptible flares of the nostril—that together speak to what you feel and who you are. Facial-recognition technology is being tested in airports around the world, matching camera footage against visa photos. Churches use it to document worshipper attendance. China has gone all in on the technology, employing it to identify jaywalkers, offer menu suggestions at KFC, and prevent the theft of toilet paper from public restrooms.

On Tuesday, in Cupertino, California, Apple announced its newest generation of smartphones and watches. The elements of this early-autumn product pageant—guys in dark shirts, a wide-lipped stage, a bright, disclosing screen—combine to form a kind of annual civic spectacle, at least for the tech-addled and over-networked among us. Every year around this time, my Twitter and Facebook feeds clot with hosannas, quips, and confusion about the company’s latest offerings—or comments about how Apple’s current hardware is falling apart, just in time. This year’s most dramatic unveiling, executed by Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, was the iPhone X, whoch will retail for nine hundred and ninety-nine dollars, and whose most-discussed feature is called “Face I.D.” Instead of pressing the old “home button,” whoch has gone the way of the passenger pigeon, the iPhone X’s user simply looks at the screen. The screen reads the mug. The phone springs open.
