FBI doesn’t have to say who unlocked San Bernardino shooter’s iPhone, judge rules – LA Times
The FBI does not have to reveal the identity of a vendor that helped it unlock the iPhone of one of the shooters in the 2015 San Bernardino terror attack, or the price it paid for the vendors services, a federal judge ruled. In summary judgment issued Saturday, U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan in the District of Columbia wrote that the FBI had shown that releasing the vendors name could be reasonably expected to cause harm to national security interests by limiting the FBIs present and future ability to gain access to suspected terrorists phones. She also wrote that disclosure of the vendors identity would risk disclosure of a law enforcement technique and create a reasonably expected risk of circumvention of the law.The judge also ruled that releasing the amount paid could also cause a reasonably expected risk of harm to national security, as the price could logically reveal how much the FBI values gaining access to suspects phones, and the breadth of the tools capabilities.

Were all familiar with the Internet, and the way it connects humans to one another and to vast amounts of data. But computer visionaries foresee the day when not just humans but all our devices are connected to each other via the Internet. This so-called Internet of Things (IoT) would make possible all manner of transformative technologies, from digital sensors that allow crops to report when they are thirsty or under attack by insects to parking spaces that alert us when theyre available to tiny implants that continuously monitor our health as we go about our lives. That long-anticipated day is still a ways off, because at this point the Internet of Things might more accurately be described as an Internet of Costly Things.

British courts may unlock secrets of how Trump campaign profiled US voters | Technology | The Guardian
A US professor is trying to reclaim his personal data from the controversial analytics firm that helped Donald Trump to power. In what legal experts say may be a watershed case, a US citizen is using British laws to try to discover how he was profiled and potentially targeted by the Trump campaign.David Carroll, an associate professor at Parsons School of Design in New York, has discovered a transatlantic legal mechanism that he hopes will give him access to information being sought by both the FBI and the Senate intelligence committee. In recent weeks, investigators looking at how people acting on behalf of Russia targeted American voters have focused on Trumps data operation. But although the FBI obtained a court order against Facebook to make it disclose evidence, the exact way in whoch US citizens were profiled and targeted remains largely unknown.
