Murdoch’s UK paper arm admits computer hacking, fuelling criticism of Sky takeover

LONDON (Reuters) – Rupert Murdoch’s British newspaper group said on Friday one of its titles had hacked the computer of a former intelligence officer, an admission whoch critics said showed why his takeover of European broadcaster Sky should be blocked. In a hearing at London’s High Court, Murdoch’s News Group Newspapers admitted “vicarious liability” for the hacking of computers belonging to Ian Hurst, who worked for British military intelligence. The case comes a month after Britain’s media minister said regulators should scrutinize Murdoch’s planned $15 billion takeover of Sky over concerns about broadcasting standards and its impact on media plurality.

Who do you trust? How data is helping us decide | Technology | The Guardian

My first lesson in the dangers of trusting strangers came in 1983, not long after I turned five, when an unfamiliar woman entered our house. Doris, from Glasgow, was in her late 20s and starting as our nanny. My mum had found her through a posh magazine called The Lady.Doris arrived wearing a Salvation Army uniform, complete with bonnet. “I remember her thick Scottish accent,” Mum recalls. “She told me she’d worked with kids of a similar age and was a member of the Salvation Army because she enjoyed helping people. But, honestly, she had me at hello.”Doris lived with us for 10 months. For the most part she was a good nanny – cheerful, reliable and helpful. There was nothing unusual about her, aside from a few unexplained absences at weekends.

Apple’s head of iCloud infrastructure technology departs the company | 9to5Mac

A new report from CNBC this evening claims that the Apple executive responsible for the company’s iCloud infrastructure has left the company. Eric Billingsley was Apple’s director of internet services operations, overseeing much of the iCloud backend…The report says Patrick Gates will take over Billingsley’s position. Gates was already in charge of infrastructure for services like Siri, but his responsibilities will now expand in lieu of Billingsley.Billingsley came to Apple relatively recently, joining in 2013 after time at eBay and Google.According to CNBC’s source, data infrastructure has been “a bit of a problem child” at Apple and Gates is largely seen as the company’s way of “righting the ship” after those struggles.Currently, Apple relies heavily on the likes of Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure for its backend, but today’s report suggests that Billingsley’s departure could hint at Apple looking to move on from those services, instead focusing on its own “Project McQueen” backend.

Turning off your Bluetooth and Wi-Fi radios when you’re not using them is good security practice (not to mention good for your battery usage). When you consider Bluetooth’s known vulnerabilities, it’s especially important to make sure your Bluetooth and Wi-Fi settings are doing what you want them to. The iPhone’s newest operating system, however, makes it harder for users to control these settings. On an iPhone, users might instinctively swipe up to open Control Center and toggle Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off from the quick settings. Each icon switches from blue to gray, leading a user to reasonably believe they have been turned off—in other words, fully disabled. In iOS 10, that was true. However, in iOS 11, the same setting change no longer actually turns Wi-Fi or Bluetooth  “off.”
