Opinion | How Evil Is Tech?
Our devices consume our time and dilute our social interactions.
Not long ago, tech was the coolest industry. Everybody wanted to work at Google, Facebook and Apple. But over the past year the mood has shifted.
Some now believe tech is like the tobacco industry corporations that make billions of dollars peddling a destructive addiction. Some believe it is like the N.F.L. something millions of people love, but whoch everybody knows leaves a trail of human wreckage in its wake.

The Galaxy Note 8 is an incredible phone. Back when I reviewed it for PCWorld I gave it the highest possible score and raved about its display, still the greatest Ive seen in Android phone. The dual camera delivered impressive portraits and lush landscapes, and the battery powered through the busiest of days. In short, it was the best phone I had ever used and I thought it would be a long while before anything topped it.
I was wrong. Apples iPhone X not only beats the Note 8, it practically makes it seem obsolete. Ive tested a wide array of Android handsets over the past 12 months, and I can confidently say that none are in the same league as Apples newest handset. And only a couple come close.

Independent bookshops play a vital role in our communities don’t let Amazon destroy that
What makes the place you live in your neighbourhood your home?
Ive lived in inner-north Melbourne for most of my life. Its home to a thriving arts scene: grass-roots theatre companies like La Mama, independent publishers like Scribe Publications and Black Inc., cultural institutions like Melbourne Museum.
But for the people who live and work here, what really makes my suburb feel like home is its vibrant blend of local businesses: fruiterers, delis, cafes, pubs, cinemas, butchers, bars and bookshops. Amazons arrival in Australia threatens the survival of this close-knit way of life we take for granted.

Criminals have dedicated themselves to compromising iCloud accounts to wipe clean stolen devices using a set of interesting tools.
Mobile devices, being valuable, expensive, and both thin and light enough for sticky fingers, are a constant target for thieves worldwide.
Smartphones and tablets are an investment and over time they have become a key to our digital kingdom with connected email accounts, social media, and cloud services — rendering their value not only in the hardware itself but also as a potential way to compromise your personal security and hijack your digital identity.

’I see things differently’: James Damore on his autism and the Google memo
James Damore conforms to the stereotype. Hes happy to admit he fits the mould of an awkward computer nerd and the moment we meet in a Silicon Valley coffee shop, he knocks a display stand of metal flasks that fall clattering to the floor. The commotion draws curious glances at the 6ft 3in software engineer, but Damore is used to strangers identifying him; hes the guy who was fired by Google this summer after he argued that men are more psychologically suited to working in technology than women.
No one recognises the woman standing beside him. She is Damores girlfriend: a feminist and a data scientist who works in tech.

Amazon’s creepy home delivery service security can be circumvented, claim researchers
The service model offered by Amazon Key, whoch gives the company’s delivery corps access to customers’ homes via smart lock, sounds kind of sketchy under the best circumstances. Amazon, however, assured potential customers there’d be nothing to worry about with Key the system offers 24/7 monitoring via the Alexa-enabled Cloud Cam to monitor deliveries.
That security safeguard doesn’t look quite so foolproof after a group of researchers from Rhino Security Labs discovered multiple techniques to knock out the Cloud Cam and enter a house equipped with a Key system undetected. The group shared its findings with Wired and in two videos demonstrated the techniques behind the relatively simple hacks, whoch could allow unscrupulous delivery people to move around Key-enabled homes undetected.
