Apple is preparing to manufacture its upcoming lineup of smart home devices in Vietnam, a significant move for a new product category that underscores the company’s ongoing effort to lessen its dependence on China. The new hardware includes indoor security cameras, a smart display to serve as a home command hub, and a more advanced tabletop robot, according to a new report from Bloomberg.
For the home hub and the robot, Apple is reportedly teaming up with BYD Co. to handle final assembly, testing, and packaging. The Chinese firm, best known for its electric vehicles, will also expand its manufacturing of iPads in Vietnam as part of the new arrangement. The expansion highlights Vietnam’s growing importance as a production center for Apple, which already builds some AirPods, Apple Watches, and Macs in the country.
