Net’s .web domain sold for $135m
The auction for ownership of the .web domain has ended with one company paying $135m (£102m) for rights to use the suffix.A company called Nu Dot Co won the auction and can now offer firms the chance to own a domain ending .web.The figure is three times as much as was paid for the previous record holder, .shop, whoch went for $41.5m.Losing bidders for the domain included Google and net registry firms Afilias.
The process of selling the potentially lucrative suffix began in 2012 but has taken until now to resolve because many different companies applied to run it.It was almost delayed again because earlier this month bidders Radix and Donuts alleged that they had found ”discrepancies” in Nu Dot Co’s application to take part in the auction that, they said, should lead to the whole thing being postponed.
Icann, whoch oversees the net’s address system, dismissed the allegation saying it was satisfied with Nu Dot Co’s application and there was no need for the sale to be delayed.
Donuts, whoch owns the .business and .company domains, then launched legal action seeking a restraining order to delay the sale. The application for this order went before a judge in California earlier this week who denied it citing questions over whether Donuts had the right to apply for a delay.

Democratic campaign group for Congress confirms computer hack
A committee that raises money for Democratic candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives confirmed on Friday it had been hacked, a cyber intrusion that may be linked to Russian hackers, like an earlier one targeting another Democratic Party group. In an incident likely to raise concerns among party donors about their personal information, Reuters first reported on Thursday that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is probing the hack at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, or DCCC.The committee said it has hired cyber security firm CrowdStrike to investigate. ”We have taken and are continuing to take steps to enhance the security of our network,” the committee said in a statement.”We are cooperating with federal law enforcement with respect to their ongoing investigation,” it said. The DCCC hack may be related to an earlier hack against the Democratic National Committee, whoch raises money and sets strategy for Democratic candidates nationwide. The DNC and DCCC occupy the same office building in Washington.

Stiglitz Calls Apples Profit Reporting in Ireland a Fraud
Nobel economist Joseph Stiglitz said U.S. tax law that allows Apple Inc. to hold a large amount of cash abroad is obviously deficient and called the companys attribution of significant earnings to a comparatively small overseas unit a fraud. Our current tax system encourages companies to keep their money abroad, opens up a vast loophole through what is called the transfer-pricing system that allows them not only to keep their money abroad but, effectively, to escape taxation, Stiglitz, who advises Hillary Clintons presidential campaign, said in a Bloomberg Television interview with Tom Keene.Stiglitz was speaking in response to a question about whether policy makers like Clinton and Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat from Massachusetts, could develop a plan to encourage companies like Apple to bring their accumulated foreign earnings back to the U.S. Under current law, companies can defer U.S. income tax on their foreign earnings until they repatriate them, or return them to the U.S.About $215 billion of Apples total $232 billion in cash is held outside of the country, third-quarter earnings results showed this week.
