Skype, the OG videoconferencing app, shuts down on May 5 in favour of Microsoft Teams. It was first released in August 2003, the creation of Swedish, Danish and Estonian developers who sold it to eBay for $2.6 billion in 2005. Skype eventually wound up at Microsoft in 2011 with a deal valued at $8.5 billion. It was one of the oldest apps on thriftmac, having first been posted in May 2006. Microsoft now offers a free version of Teams as an alternative.
