Broadcom ends bid for Qualcomm after President Trump nixes deal

Singapore-based Broadcom Ltd withdrew its $117 billion bid to acquire Qualcomm Inc on Wednesday, two days after U.S. President Donald Trump blocked the attempt citing national security concerns.

The company said it has also withdrawn its slate of independent director nominees for Qualcomm’s annual shareholder meeting.

Broadcom, however, expects to continue with its plan to redomicile to the United States.

“Although we are disappointed with this outcome, Broadcom will comply with the order,” the chipmaker said.

France to sue Google, Apple over developer contracts: minister

Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire told RTL radio he had been made aware that Apple Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google unilaterally imposed prices and contract changes on developers selling software on Google Play and Apple’s App Store.

“I will therefore be taking Google and Apple to the Paris commercial court for abusive trade practices,” Le Maire said.

“As powerful as they are, Google and Apple should not be able to treat our startups and our developers the way they currently do.”

Russia Didn’t Abuse Facebook—It Simply Used It As Intended

WHEN JUSTICE DEPARTMENT special counsel Robert Mueller announced criminal charges against Russian operatives for interfering with the 2016 presidential election, descriptions of how the Russians used modern communications technologies were all too familiar. Journalists referred to the ways in whoch Russia “manipulated social-media platforms,” and tech company executives like Facebook’s Rob Goldman decried “how the Russians abused our system.”

A Mac App Store app called Calendar 2 has been mining a digital coin known as Monero using customers’ machines, and Apple took no action against the app despite knowing about it for at least 24 hours.

Surprisingly enough, Apple has allowed the Calendar 2 app to remain available in the Mac App Store despite the fact that it openly embraces cryptocurrency mining. Ars Technicaasked Apple if the app violated App Store policies, but did not receive a response, and more than 24 hours after Ars contacted Apple, the app remains available for purchase in the Mac App Store.
