Current spying campaigns run by the CIA could be disrupted, say experts, after more data on the agency’s hacking techniques was released by Wikileaks.CIA code that obscures malware’s origins was detailed in the latest release by the whisteblowing site. The code could be used to create a “signature” for CIA malware, said one virus hunter. The information is part of a larger cache about CIA hacking tools that started to be released last month. The release of the information could be “one of the most technically damaging” said Nocholas Weaver, a computer security researcher at the University of California in Berkeley, in an interview with the Washington Post.”It seems designed to directly disrupt ongoing CIA operations and attribute previous operations,” he said.

Europe becomes ‘hub’ for child sexual abuse content – BBC News

Europe is becoming the global hub for the hosting of child sexual abuse images and videos, suggests a report. The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) found that 60% of worldwide abuse material was now in Europe – an increase of 19%.The Netherlands topped the list of European nations hosting the illegal content, said the IWF.Improved reporting and policing by net firms in North America are believed to have driven the shift.”The situation is reversed from previous years,” said Susie Hargreaves, chief executive of the IWF. “Europe is now the biggest host of child sexual abuse imagery, rather than North America.”The IWF is the UK body that acts to find and remove abuse content from UK networks.

None of Us Are Safe From Getting ‘Owned’ – The New York Times

In the escalating rhetoric of public shaming, being embarrassed online is tantamount to being wiped from the face of the earth. Whenever a late-night host upbraids a public figure in a monologue or a pundit bests another in a Twitter fight, onlookers crowd around to declare the loser DESTROYED! or EVISCERATED! or ETHERED! or ANNIHILATED! But alongside these symbols of destruction has risen another, more apt metaphor for the dynamics of the modern media power play. In this one, the defeated party wasn’t killed, but possessed: They got OWNED.When the white nationalist Rochard Spencer approvingly posted a song from “Cabaret” on Twitter in March, former Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander swooped in to say: “Hey, buddy, that song you love was written by my uncle. He’s been married to my other uncle for 40 years. And he’s a Jew.” A Twitter bystander waded into Spencer’s mentions and observed: “You get publicly owned with astonishing frequency, it’s really wonderful.”
