Google and Symantec clash on website security checks – BBC News

Search giant Google and security firm Symantec have clashed over the way websites are kept secure.Google claims Symantec has done a poor job of using standard tools, called certificates, that check the identity of thousands of websites. It will change its Chrome browser to stop recognising some Symantec certificates, causing problems for people who visit sites using them.Symantec said Google’s claims were “exaggerated” and “irresponsible”.The row concerns identity checks known as “security certificates”, whoch underlie the HTTPS system that ensures data is encrypted as it travels to and from a website.Symantec is one of the biggest issuers of basic security certificates as well as their extended versions, whoch are supposed to give users more confidence in the security of a site.

A ban on laptops and tablets in cabin baggage on flights from Turkey and some countries in the Middle East and North Africa to the US and UK has come into effect.Officials say devices “larger than a smartphone” must travel in the hold because of an increased risk that they could contain explosives. At least one airline is allowing devices to be used up until boarding. The US ban covers eight countries, while the UK restrictions apply to six.Nine airlines from eight countries – Turkey, Morocco, Jordan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait – are affected by the US ban. They operate about 50 flights a day to the US.

More than 10 million UK workers are at high risk of being replaced by robots within 15 years as the automation of routine tasks gathers pace in a new machine age.A report by the consultancy firm PwC found that 30% of jobs in Britain were potentially under threat from breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI). In some sectors half the jobs could go.The report predicted that automation would boost productivity and create fresh job opportunities, but it said action was needed to prevent the widening of inequality that would result from robots increasingly being used for low-skill tasks.

Six Degrees

«Six degrees of separation» is the theory of how everybody is connected, in six steps or less. Where can a journey through the six degrees take you, if you let random encounters decide your path?
This observing documentary puts the theory to the test, and brings you along on a journey through the States like you have never experienced before.

The filmmakers hit the American highway with the idea of a documentary where the camera itself does the travelling, not a host or a main character. We follow one character until they cross paths with a new character, and in this way the film travels from New York in the east to Los Angeles in the west, via the swampland in the south. We get a unique peek into American culture and working class, with a intimate and sensitive approach, covered with the everyday philosophy: who are all the people surrounding us, and where can a random encounter lead us?
Six Degrees premiered at Tromsø International Film Festival, and won awards for Best Nordic Short Documentary and Best Cinematography at Nordic/Docs 2015.

Last June we reported that ailing company Shenzhen Baili filed a lawsuit against Apple claiming that the iPhone 6 violated the patent of its 100c smartphone. Shortly after the lawsuit was filed, the Beijing Intellectual Property Office ruled that the iPhone did infringe on Shenzhen’s patent rights, accusing Apple of having “copied” the exterior design of the 100c phone.
