An extraordinary array of gadgets are on display at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, both technologies already on the market and ones that will be soon. There is less discussion about the privacy and security costs that come with our increasingly connected world. Many of us live our entire lives “connected” by smartphones, which we carry every day and everywhere.Phone apps turn your house lights on and switch off air-conditioning.Cars monitor not only our location but our driving habits and send that information back to the vehicle’s manufacturer, among others. What tech companies call the “Internet of Things” will make us healthier and safer, they say.Critics reply that we are being stripped of privacy and isolated from communicating with other people. So is a more technologically connected world a better one?
Chinese phone maker ZTE has agreed to plead guilty on charges of violating U.S. sanctions restricting the sale of American technology to Iran and North Korea, and lying about it to investigators. It will pay $892 million in fees, effectively wiping out about two years of the company’s net profits.According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, ZTE’s penalties targeted the firm’s practice of acquiring American technology and reselling it in the form of ZTE equipment to Iran and North Korea over a six-year period between 2010 and 2016.The report cited the U.S. Justice Department’s national security division lead Mary McCord as saying, that “the highest levels of management within the company approved the scheme” to violate U.S. sanctions, and said ZTE “repeatedly lied to and misled federal investigators.”ZTE sold nearly 62 million smartphones in 2016. The company is China’s third largest phone maker by global unit sales after Huawei and BBK (which markets phones under the brands Oppo, vivo and OnePlus).

Det är den 8:e mars idag, Den internationella kvinnodagen och MILCKs musik “I ca?t keep quiet” har blivit en signatur för kampen för alla lika värde och för kvinnors rätt.
The #ICANTKEEPQUIET project is dedicated to celebrating our unique voices and identities, in an effort to break the cycles of oppression and fear, perpetuated by today’s media.
The first project was the #ICANTKEEPQUIET choir of D.C., which started the movement of guerilla style performances at The Women’s March on Jan 21st, 2017. The choir sang for unsuspecting strangers in the DC area with flash mob performances of an acapella version of “Quiet”.
Simultaneously, #ICANTKEEPQUIET is launching projects on the virtual frontier. For example, we are collecting stories about everyday people who have braved extraordinary distances to speak up. Stories will be used as inspiration for future art projects to be shared later this year. We are currently searching through all #icantkeepquiet lists on twitter, instagram, and facebook, and accepting submissions. Read more about that here.
