Much of Facebook’s recent growth can be attributed to the spread of video on its network – and the company told investors recently it planned to aggressively monetise that success.Today, it announced some ideas to get things moving – starting with a change many users may not appreciate.Videos have autoplayed on Facebook’s News Feed for some time, leading to a curious rise of “silent movies” as publishers adapted to knowing that the majority of viewers would be watching, but not listening, to their work. But between now and the end of the year Facebook’s News Feed will be enabling sound on your News Feed by default, a move the company has been testing out on a limited number of users for a short while.

Verizon Communications Inc (VZ.N) is close to a revised deal to buy Yahoo Inc’s (YHOO.O) core internet business for $250 million to $350 million less than the original agreed price of $4.83 billion, according to a source briefed on the matter.Since last year, Verizon had been trying to persuade Yahoo to amend the terms of the acquisition agreement to reflect the economic damage from two cyber attacks. A source told Reuters that the deal, which could come as soon as this week, will entail Verizon and Yahoo sharing the liability from potential lawsuits related to the data breaches.Another person familiar with the situation said the price cut was likely to be around $250 million, a figure that Bloomberg reported earlier on Wednesday.A representative from Verizon declined to comment. Yahoo did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Not Far From Home with Erkki Punttila

Our Finnish friend Erkki Punttila is quite the character. Through his blog, PackGoFind, he approaches his bikepacking excursions and his position on Kona’s Super Grassroots team with a straightforward manner and plenty of dry humor. We set Erkki off with a new Kona Unit for an adventure “not far from home”.

At the Cog link below you’ll find the accompanying photo story from this trip, including some tips, Erkki style, for your own overnight trips – even if they’re not far from home.

Signal lanserar krypterade videosamtal

In an effort to compete with other messaging services, Open Whisper System’s Signal — a secure chat service known for its commitment to privacy — now lets users make encrypted video calls. The feature is in open beta, and adds to its existing end-to-end encrypted chat and voice-calling service.
The open beta is available to both iOS and Android users, though you’ll have to opt in first. The feature is rolling out gradually, but it will eventually be enabled by default, likely when it comes out of beta. If you have received the update, go to Signal’s Settings > Advanced > Video calling beta to turn it on.

The sample we are discussing today has been linked to the Mac OSX version of Xagent component from Sofacy/APT28/Sednit APT. This modular backdoor with advanced cyber-espionage capabilities is most likely planted on the system via the Komplex downloader.
Once successfully installed, the backdoor checks if a debugger is attached to the process. If it detects one, it terminates itself to prevent execution. Otherwise, it waits for an Internet connection before initiating communication with the C&C servers. After the communication has been established, the payload starts the modules.

Spridning
