AI: EU agrees landmark deal on regulation of artificial intelligence

European Union officials have reached a provisional deal on the world’s first comprehensive laws to regulate the use of artificial intelligence.

After 36 hours of talks, negotiators agreed rules around AI in systems like ChatGPT and facial recognition.

The European Parliament will vote on the AI Act proposals early next year, but any legislation will not take effect until at least 2025.

The US, UK and China are all rushing to publish their own guidelines.

ExpressVPN Releases Apple TV App: Our Hands-On Impressions

One of the things I was most excited about when Apple announced TVOS 17 at its Worldwide Developers Conference this year was that the latest Apple TV operating system would finally support native virtual private network applications. At last, I’d be able to use a VPN to enhance my streaming experience on Apple TV. Now that TVOS 17 has been available for a few months, VPN providers have been slowly rolling out their apps for Apple’s streaming device. So when ExpressVPN — CNET’s Editors’ Choice best overall VPN — released its Apple TV app this month, I was eager to try it.

EU agrees ‘historic’ deal with world’s first laws to regulate AI

The world’s first comprehensive laws to regulate artificial intelligence have been agreed in a landmark deal after a marathon 37-hour negotiation between the European Parliament and EU member states.

The agreement was described as “historic” by Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner responsible for a suite of laws in Europe that will also govern social media and search engines, covering giants such as X, TikTok and Google.

Breton said 100 people had been in a room for almost three days to seal the deal. He said it was “worth the few hours of sleep” to make the “historic” deal.

Apple’s chief iPhone and Apple Watch designer leaving – 9to5Mac

Apple’s head of iPhone and Apple Watch product design is departing the company, according to a new report from Bloomberg.

Tang Tan, who currently holds the title of VP of product design at Apple, will leave the company in February, the report says. This has prompted a “shake-up to the company’s most critical product lines.”

Currently, Tan reports to John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering. Upon his departure, Tan’s responsibilities will be split up as part of a “reshuffling” inside the hardware engineering team.

Apple Appears to Have Blocked ‘Beeper Mini’ App That Brought iMessage to Android

Apple appears to have blocked the new ‘Beeper Mini‘ app that brought iMessage to Android users. Beeper Mini implemented Apple’s end-to-end encryption protocol natively within the Android app itself and was gaining popularity after launching this week.

Reddit users began to report issues a few hours ago. @NoHeroicsNZ writes

I’ve been using the app without issues since it launched, but this morning I’m unable to send/receive messages via either WiFi or Cellular Data and I’m getting an error back saying “failed to lookup on server: lookup request timed out”.
