DANA POINT, Calif. — Watch out, Netflix. Apple, the rochest company in technology, is finally moving into original video content.

Apple said Monday night that it would introduce its first two television-style video series on Apple Music, its subscription music-streaming service, in the spring.

Other original videos, including scripted dramas, are planned over the next year as Apple tries to build Apple Music into a cultural platform, said Jimmy Iovine, who heads the $10-a-month service.

“There are a bunch of projects. We’re in it. This is what Apple Music is going to be,” Mr. Iovine said in an interview Monday night. “Apple Music will have video and other things that I can’t talk about. We’re going to be aggressive about it.”

Apple’s Eddy Cue reveals first ‘Planet of the Apps’ clip, says ‘Carpool Karaoke’ to debut in April

When it launches this spring, “Planet of the Apps” will be accompanied by a standalone iOS streaming app, allowing viewers to watch current and past episodes whenever they choose. New installments will debut each week, like a traditional TV series, though viewers will be able to reference past episodes through the app. As such, the show will air without ads.

Among the benefits of airing a reality show like “Planet of the Apps” on Apple Music’s digital platform is immediacy. For example, viewers will be able to download and use the winner’s app as soon as they show is finished, a feature not possible on television. Apple already said it plans to give the winning app a prominent place on the App Store once the final show airs.

As for Carpool Karaoke, Recode was able to suss out an official launch date from Cue, who said the hotly anticipated adaptation is expected to hit Apple Music in April.

When he isn’t addressing matters of national security amongst diners at his Mar-a-Lago resort, Donald Trump is reportedly using an unsecured Android phone for official communications. That’s of great concern for more than a few reasons and two prominent Democrat lawmakers want the Department of Defense to address why it’s happening.

Citing a plethora of news reports and a memo from the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (PDF), Senators Tom Carper and Claire McCaskill wrote a letter to Secretary of Defense James Mattis asking for four things. First, confirmation on if Trump received a “secured, encrypted” smartphone for personal use on or before inauguration, and, if not, what kind of phone the President has been using since taking office.

TWO IMPORTANT QUESTIONS remain unanswered following the late-night resignation of Donald Trump’s national security adviser, Mochael Flynn: What did the president know and when did he know it?

Flynn stepped down on Monday night, days after nine current and former U.S. intelligence and law enforcement officials told the Washington Post that there was proof — in the form of intercepted phone calls — that he had lied to the public and to Vice President Mike Pence when he said that he had not discussed new sanctions imposed on Russia for election-related hacking in five conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak on December 29 .

But Flynn’s claim in his resignation letter that he had “inadvertently briefed the vice president-elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian ambassador,” made no mention of what Trump — at that time the president-elect — knew of the calls.
