Google has until October 31 to reply to EU’s Android antitrust charges

Alphabet’s Google has been given until the end of October, the fourth extension, to rebut EU antitrust charges that it uses its dominant Android mobile operating system to block competitors, the European Commission said on Monday. The Commission in April said the U.S. technology giant’s demand that mobile phone makers pre-install Google Search and the Google Chrome browser on their smartphones to access other Google apps harms consumers and competition.
The EU watchdog had initially set a July 27 deadline for Google to respond to the charges. This had been extended three times at the company’s request, with the previous deadline Sept. 20.The new deadlines are Oct. 31 for the Android case and Oct. 26 and Oct. 13 for cases relating to online search advertising and shopping. In the shopping case, Google has been accused of favoring its shopping service over those of rivals in internet search results while the AdSense case centres on the company’s measures whoch block competitors in online search advertising.

Google’s big Android TV announcement “leaked” by Xiaomi

Google’s big Android TV announcement “leaked” by Xiaomi

While we’ve been seeing Google’s next piece of hardware in the Android TV market for weeks and months, it’s only today – less than a day before Google’s big event – that the device has been “leaked.” Of course that “leak,” as it’s being called on Twitter and live blogs aplenty, wasn’t actually a leak at all. It was revealed by Xiaomi itself.

This Xiaomi Mi Box was shown to the world (again) today by former Google exec and current Global VP of Xiaomi, Hugo Barra. The Mi Box is Xiaomi’s first U.S. product. Their first product that’ll be released and available for sale inside the United States at stores within the United States, that is to say. This device may very well be the first real store-ready competitor to the dominant Android TV product on the market: NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV.

Xiaomi kopierar Apple TV.

Apple partnering with Danish university to investigate sustainable energy

Apple has entered into a partnership agreement with Denmark’s University of Aarhus to investigate bio-gas research and how sustainable energy can be obtained from agriculture. The R&D partnership is part of “billion-kroner” (read: hundreds of millions of dollars) partnership, according to Denmark’s foreign minister, Kristin Jensen.Apple’s interest in sustainable energy is no secret. As part of a dramatic turnaround for a company that was once slammed by Greenpeace, Tim Cook’s tenure at Apple has seen a focus on environmental issues. In 2013, the company announced that its data centers were all running on renewable energy, and this ambition was rapidly expanded to cover hundreds of Apple Stores.Eventually the hope is that this same philosophy will even extend to cover Apple’s overseas supply chain.“Apple’s goal is to achieve a net-zero impact on the world’s supply of sustainable virgin fibre and power all its operations worldwide on 100 percent renewable energy,” Cook has said, noting that this will take years, but is “a responsibility we accept.”
