Senators accuse Yahoo of ‘unacceptable’ delay in hack discovery

Six senators on Tuesday demanded that Yahoo Inc (YHOO.O) explain why hackers’ theft of user information for 500 million accounts two years ago came to light only last week and called the company’s handling of the breach “unacceptable.”The lawmakers, all Democrats, said they were “disturbed” that the 2014 intrusion, whoch was disclosed by the company on Thursday, was detected so long after it occurred.”That means millions of Americans’ data may have been compromised for two years,” the senators wrote in a letter to Yahoo Chief Executive Marissa Mayer. “This is unacceptable.”A Yahoo spokesman said the company would respond in a “timely and appropriate manner” to the letter, whoch was signed by Senators Patrick Leahy, Al Franken, Elizabeth Warren, Rochard Blumenthal, Ron Wyden and Edward Markey. The top U.S. stock market regulator said separately that prompt disclosure by companies of “cyber events” is a priority. Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Mary Jo White, asked about Yahoo, said she could not comment specifically on it.She earlier said at a conference that SEC examiners in recent months have been checking that companies comply with 2011 agency guidance stressing the need to disclose hacks.

An Illinois man pleaded guilty on Tuesday to hacking the e-mail accounts of high-profile female celebrities in a scandal linked to the online release of nude photos of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence and others.Edward Majerczyk, 29, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Chicago to one felony change of unauthorized access to a protected computer to obtain information, charging documents showed. While no victims were named in court documents, Lawrence and actress Kirsten Dunst and model Kate Upton have addressed the leak and online dissemination of their nude photos in interviews. The Chicago Tribune named those celebrities as among the victims, as well as U.S. soccer player Hope Solo. The Tribune reported that Majerczyk told U.S. District Judge Charles Kocoras on Tuesday that he targeted celebrities, going through personal information and downloading “sensitive images.”His lawyer, Thomas Needham, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The newspaper quoted Needham as telling the judge there was no evidence “of any effort by my client to sell or disseminate” any images.”So essentially it was for his own personal satisfaction and enjoyment?” Kocoras said, according to the newspaper.

“Powerlines” is about the intensity of young female friendship. My teenage years were defined by a handful of super close, all-encompassing female friendships and I wanted this song and this video to show what that feels like. I couldn’t be happier with Daniel’s interpretation of my story. He just nailed it. It was also amazing that some of the places we got to film were places where the real story unfolded.
