Stingray documents offer rare insight into police and FBI surveillance

Court documents ordered released by a judge in Oakland, California, have revealed rare insights into how local police and the FBI use a sophisticated surveillance device known as Stingray.

Stingray, manufactured by the Delaware-based Harris Corporation, is one of a class of devices known as “cell site simulators” or “IMSI-catchers”. About the size of a suitcase, they work by pretending to be a cellphone tower in order to strip metadata and in some cases phone content and data from nearby devices tricked into connecting to it.

Despite the fact that the devices are also capable of listening to phone calls, in many cases they still do not require a warrant to use, instead requiring a much lower-level authorisation known as a “trap-and-trace”, a court order designed in the era of the rotary phone.

Assange says WikiLeaks to release ‘significant’ Clinton campaign data

WikiLeaks founder and editor-in-chief Julian Assange said on Wednesday his organization planned to release “significant” information linked to the campaign of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton before the Nov. 8 election.Asked if the data could be a game-changer in the election, the Australian told Fox News in an interview conducted by satellite: “I think it’s significant. You know, it depends on how it catches fire in the public and in the media.”Assange has been living in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London for five years to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faces sexual assault accusations. He denies the allegations.WikiLeaks released files in July of what it said were audio recordings pulled from the emails of the Democratic National Committee that were obtained by hacking its servers. That release, during the Democratic National Convention where Clinton was officially named the party’s presidential nominee, was the second batch in a series that deeply rattled the party and prompted the committee’s chairwoman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, to step down.

The Blue Time

The Sami People call it the ‘blue time’ – the period in winter when the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon in northern areas of Scandinavia. Jeff Allen visits northern Norway every year, in both winter and summer, to break out of the world of credit cards and double glazing that society has become and explore the breath-taking wilderness and coastline by sea kayak with longtime friend Bjørn Eines. In more recent years, he has taken up dog sledding under the experienced wing of Tore Albrigtsen and now guides expeditions to the region to let others witness the beauty of his favourite place on earth.
Directed, filmed and edited by Greg Dennis
